The lenght of hypotenuse of an isosceles right angle triangle with area 72 cm² is

area of triangle:1/2*base*height

therefore:74 cm^2=1/2*x*x                                                                     [since isosceles right angle triangle]

74=x^2/2

x^2=74*2

x=158^1/2

x=+/-12.5698

but side can never be in negative

therefore x=+12.5698

therefore hypotenus = 12.5698*12.5698

=158

Your answer is wrong because in question
 area is 72cm^2  but you had taken 74

Area of triangle = 1/2 * base * height
      72cm^2 = 1/2 * x*x  ( since it is isoceles)
      72 * 2 = x^2
      144  =  x^2
     √144 = x
       x = 12.
Base =12cm  ,      perpendicular side=12
 By pythagorus theorem ,
  (H)^2 = (B)^2 + (P)^2
 (H ) ^2 = 12^2 + 12^2
(H)^2 = 144+ 144
 (H)^2 = 288
 H  = √288
