3y – (y + 2) = 4

⇒ 3y – y – 2 = 4

⇒ 2y – 2 = 4

⇒ 2y – 2 + 2 = 4 + 2 (Adding 2 to both sides)

⇒ 2y = 6

⇒ 2y/2 = 6/ 2 (Dividing by 2)

⇒ y = 3

∴ y = 3
