Before Constantine, I would say the major attraction of Christianity was that it welcomed people everybody else ignored. The poor, slaves, and - most important - women. People in whose company none of the other mystery cults would be caught dead, found a place for themselves in Christianity. Not that the Christians treated them equally; they certainly didn’t. But Christianity didn’t ignore them, and it promised them a better life after the grave. And the world discovered that people would fight and struggle and die for that promise.
